The MX-5 Miata has always been Mazda’s offering to drivers craving a sporty convertible that won’t break the bank. Refreshed for 2019, the Miata still holds true to its identity with a few upgrades to the popular drop-top. The biggest refinement is a newer 2.0-liter engine.
17 percent more power was added, creating an engine capable of 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. The redline also increases from 6,800 rpm to 7,500 rpm. Along with more power, the 2019 MX-5 is also expected to earn better fuel economy than its predecessor.
This engine increase was made possible through numerous Skyactiv improvements throughout. The MX-5 core is lighter than in the past. The pistons are each 27 grams lighter, with the connecting rods also losing considerable weight. Updated combustion and new exhaust systems improve the fuel efficiency and torque of the Miata, while making it sound like a sports car out on the road.

Additionally, the MX-5’s automatic transmission is fitted with a shorter final-drive ratio which translates to quicker acceleration. It sounds to us like the lighter 2019 MX-5 will up the appeal of the already fun-to-drive nature of the Miata, creating a rendition that’s fit for any driver.
Looking good, having fun
The MX-5 Miata’s classic appearance does get a few enhancements as well for 2019. An all-new brown canvas top and black metallic 17-inch wheels are available. Other additions include a telescoping steering column and easier-opening/closing doors.
New safety features are included standard on the 2019 Miata including a rearview camera, and Traffic Sign Recognition and low-speed automatic braking support from Mazda’s i-Activsense suite of safety technologies. The new features, safety and otherwise, add just seven pounds to the car’s total weight. That slight addition won’t take away from the awesome drive feel the MX-5 offers.
