To honor the 30th anniversary of the MX-5 Miata, Mazda has unveiled a special edition of the modern-day classic. The first Miata made its American debut at the Chicago Auto Show, making that setting the ideal place to announce the anniversary edition. This edition of the MX-5 builds on the changes for the Miata for the 2019 model year, including an increase in power, now at 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque (up from 155 and 148 for 2018) and a higher redline. The special edition, based on the Grand Touring trim level, comes with an exclusive Racing Orange paintjob, which serves as a tribute to the yellow MX-5 Miata Club Racer that also made its debut in Chicago in 1989.
In addition to the orange paint, both the soft top and the RF (retractable hard top) 30th Anniversary Miatas ride on 17-inch Rays forged alloy wheels in dark gunmetal paint, designed to emulate the look of Global MX-5 Cup race car wheels; piano black side mirrors; and 30th Anniversary badges on the body. All Anniversary models have 15-inch aluminum orange Brembo front brake calipers and orange Nissin rear brake calipers, while manual transmission models benefit from Bilstein shocks, a front shock tower brace, and a limited-slip differential. Inside, the Anniversary model adds black Alcantara Recaro seats with orange contrast stitching and piping, plus orange cues on the doors, steering wheel, and shift lever. Also included in the package are a 9-speaker Bose AudioPilot 2 sound system, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity (note: this feature is only available in select markets).
