  • All-electric hatchback joins hybrid, plug-in hybrid models
  • Driver-adjustable modes and regen-brake settings
  • Range pegged at 239 miles

Kia unveiled an all-electric version of its Niro, marking the most-electrified version yet of its compact hatchback. The 2019 Kia Niro EV joins the existing gasoline-electric Niro hybrid, and the Niro plug-in hybrid.

The all-electric Kia Niro will use a 64-kWh motor that makes 201 horsepower and 291 lb-ft of torque. This new EV’s range is pegged at a respectable 239 miles, which would just edge that of the Chevrolet Bolt while also making the Niro EV one of the most capable electric cars when it comes to driving range.

On a DC fast charger, the new Kia Niro EV can be juiced to 80 percent capacity in 75 minutes. A full charge on a 240-volt line takes 9.5 hours, according to Kia.

Multiple drive modes, tech-forward features

The Niro EV will have four drive modes: eco, normal, sport and eco-plus, which optimize everything from brake regen level to the climate systems. Additionally, drivers can select from four levels of brake regeneration, ranging from 0 to the most aggressive setting, 3.

In addition to these driver-adjustable switches, the Niro’s tech-forward interior features a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, plus standard wireless phone charging. Also impressive is the Niro EV’s suite of safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go.

The 2019 Kia Niro EV is expected to arrive next year, in select states such as California. Pricing is still to be announced, but for reference, the Niro plug-in model currently starts just over $28,000.
