Jeep boss Michael Manley recently confirmed to KBB that a new Jeep Wrangler pickup was definitely part of the next-generation plans for the division’s iconic go-anywhere model. Now, the first prototype of Jeep’s would-be rival to the likes of the Chevy Colorado, Honda Ridgeline and Toyota Tacoma has been spotted undergoing preliminary testing. This heavily camouflaged prototype is based on the Wrangler’s 4-door Unlimited body style and appears to have about a five-foot bed. However, at this early stage of development, it’s possible the box dimensions could change a bit.

On sale sometime in 2017, the redesigned 2018 Jeep Wrangler will adopt all-new platform that retains the rugged body-on-frame configuration but reportedly swaps out at least some of its steel body panels for lighter-weight aluminum. The new Wrangler Pickup will share that same basic design, but isn’t slated to start production at Jeep’s Toledo, Ohio, assembly facility until the second half of 2018, which would most likely see it arrive as a 2019 model.

Motivation for both the Wrangler and the new Wrangler Pickup is expected to come from several sources, including a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. We’re also likely to see a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel option on offer and there are even rumors of a plug-in hybrid at some point. Stay tuned.
