BMW’s all-new 2018 X2 xDrive28i crossover SUV, which bowed during the North American International Auto Show, will start at $39,395 including destination fee when it arrives in U.S. dealerships in March. The production version is the follow-on to the concept version shown a year ago at the show. This 5-seat crossover is slotted between the subcompact BMW X1 and compact BMW X3 in the German automaker’s lineup.
Measuring 3.2 inches shorter and 2.8 inches lower than the X1, the X2 shares its sibling’s wheelbase, while looking more athletic. That sleeker shape gives the X2 50.1 cubic feet of cargo space, a bit less than the X1. In addition to a coupe-like roofline, the X2 debuts a new version of BMW’s kidney shaped grille and the iconic BMW roundel is attached to the SUV’s C-pillar, a first for an X model. The rear features a wide bumper, rear spoiler and sporty twin tailpipes.
The X2 comes standard with xDrive, BMW’s all-wheel-drive system. Under the hood, the X2 is powered by a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Horsepower is rated at 228, and torque at 258 lb-ft, giving the X2 a quick boost to hit 60 miles per hour in just 6.3 seconds.
LED lighting standard
A base X2 is available in non-metallic Alpine White or Jet Black exterior paint and features 18-inch Y-spoke wheels and comes standard with LED headlamps and tail lamps. Nine other exterior colors are available for $550, upgraded 19-inch wheels for $600, while wood or brushed aluminum interior trim accents are available for $350.
The driver-focused interior is standard with leatherette seats, while real leather is $1,450 extra. A 6.5-inch infotainment control screen is standard, though, with navigation, an up to 8.8-inch touch control screen is available. Two pricing tier packages are available on the 2018 X2: a convenience tier includes eight features such as auto-dimming rearview, interior and exterior mirrors, keyless entry, and a panoramic moonroof for an extra $2,350 or the premium tier, which includes the convenience tier, plus remote services, head-up display, advanced real-time traffic information and navigation with touchpad controller for $4,950.
A Driver Assistance Package runs $700 for camera-based features such as lane departure warning and forward collision warning, and a Dynamic Handling Package is a $600 option. BMW’s ACC Stop & Go + Active Driving Assistant is another $1,000 option.
M Sport X offered
Drivers who want a bit more performance and sportier driving dynamics can opt for the X2 M Sport X package, which begins at $44,045 including destination fee. The X2 M Sport X package includes a Sport Automatic Transmission providing quicker upshifts and downshifts, plus paddle shifters on the steering wheel for drivers who like a manual shifting effect. The X2 M Sport X also comes with 19-inch, double-spoke wheels. For an extra $600, 20-inch, double spoke wheels are available as is a stiffer M Sport suspension ($400), which drops the ride height by 0.4 inches.
The X2 M Sport X comes standard in a nonmetallic Alpine White exterior color, with other choices optional. It’s decorated with a Frozen Grey trim, giving it a distinctive look.
BMW has not released fuel economy figures for the 2018 X2.
