As it does in the XC90, Polestar “optimization” will take the form of a software reflash of the XC60’s powertrain control module that boosts motive force and improves mid-range torque while enhancing on/off throttle response, introducing more aggressive shift mapping, quicker gear-change speeds and modifying gear-hold function to provide greater stability under high-g cornering. In keeping with Polestar tradition, the upgrade does not impact emissions, fuel economy or the factory warranty.

“Our goal is to create usable performance in everyday driving situations for Volvo owners who want an enhanced driving experience,” said Henrik Fries, Vice President, Research and Development at Polestar. “The new XC60 has provided us with an excellent base to work on with a dynamic chassis and a state of the art powertrain. With the Polestar optimization, it makes the new Volvo XC60 a true drivers’ car.”

Although it remains Volvo’s performance partner, last month the automaker revised Polestar’s mission going forward as a separately-branded “electrified global high-performance car company” intended to take on BMW’s i and Mercedes-Benz EQ organizations. Two weeks later, Volvo itself committed to an electrified future, promising that every new vehicle it introduces from 2019 on offer some form of hybrid and/or pure EV power.
