Boasting new driver assist technology and a fresh face, the 2018 Infiniti Q50 debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. Incorporating the second generation of the company’s direct adaptive steering, Infiniti said the Q50 now embodies a “holistic approach” to vehicle performance. It will also be the first Infiniti to offer Nissan’s ProPilot suite of driver-assist technology, a package that foreshadows the implementation of true autonomous vehicle operation.
The styling changes to the new flagship sedan are minimal, mainly an updating of the headlamps giving them the look of human eyes, deeper contours in the hood surface and more prominent character lines to showcase the grille treatment.

Drivetrains, including Infiniti’s 3.0-liter V6, carry over on the 2018 Q50. The big news is the revamped adaptive steering. This is a steer-by-wire system the company says aids the driver by “providing smooth operation, more direct steering responses and easy maneuverability.” The new technology is characterized as a key building block toward fully-autonomous operation of the company’s vehicles.
The ProPilot Assist technology introduced on the 2018 Infiniti Q50 packages together features like active lane keeping, backup collision protection, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and blind spot intervention. Rather than enabling true autonomous operation, Infiniti executives characterize ProPilot technology as an assist for drivers who are still responsible for the car’s operation.
