By cutting its base price and upping the pure electric range of the 2018 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid, the Korean auto maker is touting both the value and increased range of the midsize sedan. Adopting the look of the recent facelift to the standard 2018 Sonata, the plug-in variant comes about six months after that launch and now boasts the ability to travel up to 28 miles in pure EV mode and has a combined range of 600 miles on a tank of fuel.

Priced from $34,135, the entry-level Sonata Plug-in is $1,350 less than the previous model, while benefiting from the mid-cycle refresh that includes a new grille treatment, redesigned instrument panel center stack and upgraded infotainment features. While the 2018 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid Limited model is, at $39,735, $250 more than the previous version, it has additional equipment including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, LED headlamps with dynamic bending light, driver attention alert, a heated steering wheel, Qi wireless charging and a second row USB port. The 2018 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid also qualifies for a $4,919 federal tax credit as well as various local incentives. All prices include $885 delivery.

The Sonata’s hybrid system combines a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and conventional 6-speed automatic transmission with a 67-horsepower electric motor powered by a 9.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack. Hyundai says the pack is five times larger than the one used in the standard Sonata Hybrid and can be recharged using 240-volt Level 2 technology in two hours and 42 minutes. The larger pack has increased pure electric range from 27 to 28 miles. In conventional hybrid mode, EPA rates combined fuel economy at 39 mpg, while giving it 99 MPGe when the pure electric mode is factored in.
