The revamped 2018 Ford Mustang will arrive this fall with a host of new tech touches aimed at helping boost its performance. They range from a new 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission and MagneRide magnetorheological adaptive damping to an electronic line-lock system that will be available on the 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder as well as the now-more-powerful 5.0-liter V8 in the Mustang GT. Now comes word of a new feature intended to increase the GT’s popularity with non-owners by enabling it to reduce the exhaust note when the situation demands.

Quiet Start–aka Good Neighbor Mode–allows a driver to program in a time period during which the sound level of the exhaust will be significantly reduced when the engine is fired up. Ford says the 2018 GT will be the first vehicle to offer a programmable form of this feature, which will be part of an optional active valve performance exhaust system. In addition to the Quiet Exhaust mode, the system has louder Normal, Sport and Track Exhaust settings.

Brainchild of Steve von Forester, Shelby GT350 owner and former head of vehicle engineering for Ford Motor Company–who interestingly enough now heads the firm’s user experience team–Quiet Start reportedly cuts exhaust noise by nearly 10 decibels. That means with the system engaged, a new Mustang GT will be no louder than a common automatic dishwasher when it snaps to life.
