Following up on the introduction of its all-new 2017 E-Class Sedan last January in Detroit, Mercedes revealed its more practical and equally stylish sibling, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E400 4Matic Wagon. Set to hit showrooms early next year, this hauler will come with standard 3-row seating and offer buyers the choice of Luxury and Sport trims with cosmetic variations that parallel those seen on the E-Class 4-door models. It also will boast the same advanced comfort/convenience touches and new driver-assist safety technologies as the Sedans.
Although the exterior is identical in design to the E-Class Sedan from nose to the B-pillar, the Wagon has its own styling flourish highlighted by its sweeping, softly angled roofline that flows into a subtle spoiler lip that sits atop its large tailgate. The low, wide look of the Wagon’s rear fascia is further emphasized by unique LED lamps that are longer and narrower than those of the Sedan.

Inside, the new E-Class Wagon also maintains the appearance and ambiance of the Sedan, with natural grain wood accents setting off either M-B Tex or available real leather upholstery. Also transferring is the new dash configuration with the available dual 12.3-inch high-res display screens and Touch Control buttons on the multifunction steering wheel. The new Wagon has two rows of 40/20/40 split folding rear seats that ensure plenty of passenger/cargo configuration options. Loading is done via the standard one-touch Easy-Pack power tailgate but the optional Keyless-Go with Hands-Free Access can open or close the hatch with a kick motion under the rear bumper.

Less visible but no less important, the new E-Class Wagon benefits from a selection of body-stiffening reinforcements similar to those found on M-B’s Cabriolets as well as additional sound deadening materials and a host of “aero-acoustic” enhancements in the form of sound-attenuating glass, optimized exterior mirror configurations, upgraded door seals and special wind deflectors around the sunroof. U.S. buyers also will be able to add an Acoustic & Comfort Package featuring additional noise reduction materials around the passenger compartment and an infrared-absorbing film in the glass to help keep everything a bit cooler inside.
Potent 3.0-liter Biturbo V6 power
At launch, sole powertrain for this new E-Class Wagon here in America will be the automaker’s 3.0-liter V6 Biturbo gasoline engine that churns out 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of peak torque. It will be transferred to the 4Matic 4Matic AWD system via M-B’s new 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission. While official performance and EPA numbers have yet to be released, Mercedes has confirmed the new E400 4Matic Wagon will have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. The Wagon’s chassis includes a self-leveling rear suspension, but like the Sedan, a full Air Body Control package will be optional.

On the safety front, the E400 4Matic Wagon will come with the usual list of M-B goodies and also offer the Sedan’s Drive Pilot capabilities to track tidily in lane, follow safely in traffic at any speed and even brake when necessary to help prevent an impact. "The new Wagon is as dynamic as the Mercedes-Benz brand and as spacious as our customers expect, notes Ola Källenius, a board member responsible for M-B’s auto marketing and sales functions. Pricing for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E400 4Matic Wagon will be announced closer to its actual on-sale date.
