Production has begun in for the new 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF model, with the first of these Retractable Fastbacks rolling off the line at the automaker’s Ujina assembly plant in Hiroshima, Japan. Anchoring the new MX-5 RF family is the Club variant, which will start at $32,390 when its 155-horsepower/2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is backed with the standard 6-speed manual transmission and $33,120 when paired with the optional 6-speed automatic. Like all 2017 MX-5s, the Club model now comes standard with Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert systems. However, only the manual models add a limited-slip rear differential to the MX-5’s basic Bilstein shock sport suspension along with the option of a $3,400 Brembo brake and BBS wheel package that includes a front shock-tower brace, forged, lightweight BBS 17-inch alloy wheels, Brembo front brakes with red-painted calipers and extended side sills.

Moving up the line, the more plushly equipped MX-5 RF Grand Touring swaps cloth for leather upholstery and adds heated seats, Bose audio, an Adaptive Front-lighting System, High Beam Control and Lane Departure Warning and is priced at $33,455 while the automatic version is $34,660. Finished exclusively in Machine Grey, the 2017 MX-5 RF Launch Edition adds a hand-painted black top, premium Nappa leather interior, Advanced Keyless Entry, unique door-sill plates and badging plus a serialized, custom-designed 42mm Tourneau “MX-5 RF Launch Edition” watch. These models cost $34,685 or $35,750, depending on transmission. However, Mazda notes that most of the 1,000 examples to be produced already have been allocated.
