A bona fide star of the 2016 New York Auto Show, the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback) drew sufficient interest that Mazda will introduce the car with a dedicated Launch Edition similar to the first production models of the redesigned roadster. Based on a 2017 MX-5 Grand Touring model, the Launch Edition will limited to a run of just 1,000 units, all with a hand-painted black roof panel and bespoke badging. The sole choice a buyer will face is whether to pair the car’s 155-horse/2.0-liter engine with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
While deliveries of the Launch Edition won’t begin until early next year when the rest of the 2017 MX-5 RF lineup also hits showrooms, Mazda will open the Launch Edition pre-order books shortly giving priority to a select loyal Mazda owners. So far no pricing information on the car has been released, but the sticker will include a custom-designed and numbered 42mm Tourneau watch. The automaker notes that anyone who doesn’t make the list will still be able to get a new MX-5 RF with “many of the same colors and interior combinations” just not the exact pairing found on the Launch Edition.
