It’s now been confirmed that an all-new 2017 Mazda CX-5 crossover SUV will make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. While hard facts are few at this point, Mazda says the recast version of its popular compact model will take its Kodo — Soul of Motion design language to a new level of sophistication and the 5-passenger CX-5 will offer “a new dimension of driving pleasure.”
What might that ubiquitously cryptic statement actually involve? For openers, we expect the 2017 CX-5 will incorporate the latest variations on Mazda’s SkyActiv suite of efficiency/safety-enhancing technologies including the new G-Vectoring Control feature introduced on the 2017 Mazda3 and Mazda6 models. While Mazda is known to be developing a new strain of SkyActiv powertrain components, engine choices for both front-drive and AWD versions of the 2017 CX-5 models will likely consist of tweaked versions of the current 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engines. No word on whether the new CX-5’s cabin will be any larger, but we could see it adopt some of the design elements found in its larger, 3-row sibling, the gorgeous new Mazda CX-9.
