Looking to pump more performance edge into the compact sedan segment, Hyundai unveiled the 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport, which the Korean automaker says is the most powerful Elantra to date. The new trim level is in addition to the SE, Eco and Limited models currently on sale.
Central to the Sport trim level is the 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine from the Velostar Turbo. In this application it has 200 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can opt for either 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. In addition to a more powerful engine, Hyundai swapped out the car’s twist beam rear axle in favor of a more enthusiast-oriented independent rear suspension which should help sharpen the car’s handling.
Appearance upgrades
Beyond the changes beneath the sheetmetal, the Elantra Sport is distinguished from other models in the line that include unique exterior accents including blacked out moldings, rear diffuser and grille surround, a small chin spoiler and multi-spoke alloy wheels. Interior appointments include such items as a flat-bottom steering wheel, sport seats and red stitching.

“Elantra Sport demonstrates our commitment to providing drivers with compelling vehicle choices that align with their interests,” says Mike Evanoff, Hyundai Motor America manager of product planning. “This is a vehicle that reflects our own passion for cars and driving, expressing it with sharp looks, proven in-car technology, upgraded power, and fun, sporty handling.”
The front-drive 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport is positioned to compete with vehicles like the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta GLI and 2016 Dodge Dart GT Sport. The Elantra Sport will be available in the fourth quarter with pricing announced closer to its on-sale date.
