Unveiled last fall at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the restyled and updated 2017 Hyundai Elantra will match its new look and enhanced features with a stronger value story. Two versions of the new sixth-generation car go on sale this month. The entry level 2017 Elantra SE will start at $17,985 when fitted with the standard 6-speed manual transmission. Stepping up to an automatic SE with a 6-speed Shiftronic transmission and Hyundai’s Drive Mode Select system raises that figure to $18,985. Both reflect a $100 price reduction compared to their 2016 counterparts. The cuts come despite Hyundai giving the 2017 Elantra a new and more powerful 147-horsepower/2.0-liter Atkinson Cycle 4-cylinder engine, a larger, quieter and better appointed cabin. In addition to improving ride and handling, the Elantra offers enhanced infotainment/safety options including a 7.0-inch Display Audio system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

For buyers seeking more refinement, the plusher, leather-lined 2017 Elantra Limited — which only comes with the 6-speed Shiftronic — now opens at $23,185. The Limited grade also brings upgrades including unique exterior/interior trim, BlueLink telematics, a power driver’s seat, 60/40 folding rear bench and dual USB charging ports. Also included are a navigation system with 8.0-inch screen, corner-following HID headlamps, adaptive cruise control and a sunroof. Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection and Lane Keep Assist have been added to the options roster. As promised at its Los Angeles debut, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra lineup will be expanded this spring with a new fuel-efficient turbocharged Elantra Eco variant. Later on, a Sport model also will be launched with Hyundai promising it will be “the most powerful Elantra yet.”
