A 2017 Chevrolet Camaro SS 50th Anniversary Edition will serve as the official pace car for this year’s historic 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 29th. This marks the ninth time a Camaro has been tabbed for the honor and it will be piloted by another Brickyard legend, IndyCar team owner Roger Penske. Since 1969, Penske has racked up 16 Indy 500 victories — including last year’s event — more than any other team in history. Penske Racing also has been instrumental in helping Chevy sweep the last four consecutive IndyCar manufacturer titles.

Penske will be driving one of four identically prepped Camaro SS pace cars, each with an unmodified 455-horsepower/6.2-liter V8, Magnetic Ride Control suspension and Brembo brakes. The actual pace cars will be done up in Abalone White instead of the Nightfall Gray Metallic on upcoming customer cars and carry specific Indy 500 door graphics, they’ll effectively preview the look of 50th Anniversary Edition Camaro models available in showrooms later this year.

Offered on 2017 Camaro 2LT and 2SS coupe and convertible models, the 50th Anniversary Edition has a unique grille with satin chrome accents, body color front splitter, specific 20-inch alloy wheels and orange brake calipers at each corner. The 2LT models pack a 275-horse/2.0-liter turbo-4 engine and get an RS Appearance Package, which features the orange calipers on the front wheels only. Inside, all 50th Anniversary Edition cars sport bespoke details on the instrument panel, seatbacks and steering wheel along with illuminated door-sill plates. Pricing for the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro 50th Anniversary Edition lineup will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
