With the all-new 2017 BMW 5 Series set to make its official debut this fall at the Paris Auto Show, the automaker has revealed its midsize luxury sedan will be the first to benefit from new fully automated precision measuring technology. Deployed between the development and series production phases of the cycle, this super-precise optical scanning methodology employs a pair of robots to generate a fully digitized image of the vehicle and subsequently crank out an incredibly accurate (to within 100 microns) 3D data model that can be used to find and fix any deviations early on.
BMW says it’s the first automaker to introduce the technology, which will be incorporated into the BMW Group’s digitalization strategy to ensure maximum quality on its future models. The firm has been evaluating this system for over a year in the toolmaking and inspection processes at its main facility in Munich. According to BMW, in addition to being more accurate, this new system is both more space and time efficient than the single-sensor robotic approach used previously. The dual-sensor system can complete the entire scanning process in just a few days – barely half of what’s currently required – and the full automation allows evaluation work to be performed at night or in off-peak hours.
