While it won’t be arriving at dealers until the fall, Volvo has now confirmed pricing numbers for the greenest member of its all-new 7-passenger SUV family which will be available in two trim grades. The 2016 Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine Momentum model opens at $69,095 while the top-line XC90 T8 Inscription is kicks off at $72,595. Both figures are before any applicable federal, state or local tax credits, rebates or other incentives. According to Volvo, all versions of its plug-in hybrid hauler are eligible for a $4,600 federal tax credit – although it does offer the caveat that "T8 customers should consult a tax professional to determine eligibility."

Like its more conventional XC90 T6 sibling, the XC90 T8 Twin Engine is the first Volvo model built on the firm’s new Scalable Product Architecture. All T8 versions share the same 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged 4-cylinder Drive-E gasoline engine that ships motive force to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and is paired with an electric motor energized by a 9.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack that drives the rear wheels. Volvo now says the pair will develop a collective 394 horsepower in final form and let the XC90 T8 Twin Engine sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. With its battery fully charged, this stylish SUV will be able to travel up to 17 miles in pure EV mode.

Our recent first encounter with the 2016 Volvo XC90 family — including the new T8 Twin Engine — left a seriously positive impression and apparently we weren’t the only ones who found a lot to like. The automaker reports that global preorders for its state-of-the-art SUV have reached nearly 24,000 units, about half of what was projected for the entire first year. While XC90 T8 Twin Engine sales won’t begin for roughly six month, Volvo dealers will soon be getting their first evaluation-only models that will allow prospective buyers to schedule a test drive.
