Expanding the scope of its new midsize SUV family, Volvo will offer a new 2016 XC90 T5 model for buyers who love the sophisticated look and feel of its flagship people mover but don’t really need as much power or a third row of seats. Arriving in dealers next month, this 5-passenger version will be available in either front- or all-wheel drive.

In place of the T6’s 316-horse supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, the T5 will come with a turbo-only alternative that makes 250 ponies and develops 258 lb-ft of torque instead of the 295 twist units in the AWD-only T6. Here, too, power is delivered by an 8-speed automatic. Weighing 4,293 (FWD) and 4,432 (AWD) pounds, the new XC90 T5 is 195 to 334 pounds lighter than a T6, so there should be only a minimal difference in performance and the tow rating remains at 5,000 pounds.

Like its Volvo XC90 T6 and T8 siblings, the new T5 will be available in Momentum, Inscription and R-Design trim grades. Save for losing the split/folding third-row, each will come with and/or offer as optional all of the same amenities found in those variants. Pricing for the 2016 Volvo XC90 T5 Momentum starts at $44,945 in front-drive form and $46,945 when fitted with AWD — which is $3,850 less than the most affordable T6. The T5 Inscription opens at $52,245 while the R-Design commences at $50,345. As with the T5 Momentum model, stepping up to AWD adds $2,000 to each of those figures.
