Although offering no details about timing, pricing or packaging, Volvo confirmed it will bring a stretched version of its popular S60 sedan to America starting in 2015 from China. Likely to arrive here as a 2016 model, the S60L features an additional 3.1-inches of wheelbase, all of to the benefit of rear-seat legroom. Unlike the current S60 which is produced in Sweden, the S60L will be built at an assembly plant opened last fall by Volvo’s parent company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, which remains the sole – not to mention a far more cost-efficient — source point for this model.

Long-wheelbase sedans have long been popular in China where their affluent owners frequently prefer to be chauffeured around rather that contend with the decidedly challenging traffic conditions that exist there. Here in America, the Volvo S60L will join the ranks of upline "extended" 4-door offerings from Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Jaguar, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. While the standard-wheelbase S60 will still account for the bulk of sales volume, the introduction of the new S60L should provide Volvo with valuable knowledge about U.S. consumer response to a Chinese-built luxury model.
