In addition to gains in its EPA mileage numbers, the redesigned 2016 Toyota Prius has received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Structural changes to the Prius helped it outperform its predecessor in the demanding small-offset crash test raising its mark from Acceptable to Good. That step-up combined with Good ratings in the IIHS’s moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests plus the availability of a front-crash prevention system moved it from TSP to TSP+ status, a ranking it now shares with the carryover Prius v wagon.

The IIHS noted that the performance of the latest-generation forward collision system allowed the new Prius hatch to avoid impacts in both its 12-mph and 25-mph track tests which raised the car’s rating in that area from Advanced to Superior. The system also conforms to requirements set out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which has yet to evaluate the 2016 Prius. However, Toyota anticipates the new-gen Prius also will earn a 5-Star rating from NHTSA when tests are conducted.
