Modest but effective cosmetic changes coupled with significant infotainment/connectivity enhancements add to the appeal of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT that debuted in Chicago. Although the changes are limited to a bolder grille insert with four horizontal bright bars and restyled 17-inch alloy wheels included as part of the optional Style Package, they give Hyundai‘s compact 5-door sport wagon a fresher, more premium appearance.

Save for an updated 32-bit processing system that imparts better feel on the Elantra’s GT’s 3-mode Driver Selectable Steering system, cabin changes are confined to upgrades available in theTechnology Package. These include segment-first ventilated front buckets in place of the heated-only alternatives that are standard in the base GT. For 2016, the Tech kit also gains Hyundai’s next-gen AVN 4.0 navigation system with a the 7.0-inch multi-touch split-screen interface display, HD radio, SiriusXM Travel Link/Traffic and loads of downloadable and pre-installed apps as well as built-in Siri "Eyes Free" integration. The latest Tech Package also includes Hyundai’s next-generation Blue Link system with a year of complementary Blue Link Connected Care that provides Automatic Collision Notification, SOS Emergency Assistance, Enhanced Roadside Assistance and monthly vehicle health reporting/maintenance alerts.

Sole engine in the 2016 Elantra is a direct-injected 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that makes 173 horsepower and drives the front wheel via a standard 6-speed manual transmission or optional 6-speed automatic. In addition to the Tech and Style Packages, buyers can upgrade the Blue Link Connected Care basic to either Remote or Guidance packages. The 2016 Hyundai Elantra goes on sale next month and pricing starts at $19,625.
