2016 Cadillac SRX comes to Tennessee

General Motors’ former Saturn factory in Spring Hill, Tennessee, has been named as the new home of the new redesigned Cadillac SRX that’s expected to hit showrooms early next year as a 2016 model. The current iteration of this mid-size crossover SUV is being produced in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. Presently the source point for some Chevrolet Equinox models, Spring Hill is undergoing a $350 million investment program that also will set it up to assemble another, yet unnamed, future GM model, possibly the Buick Envision, an SRX-sized vehicle recently introduced in China that would slot between the Enclave and Encore crossover SUVs.

In addition to upgrading its capability to turn out complete vehicles, GM plans to invest an additional $185 million in the Tennessee facility that will allow it to expand its present build portfolio of 2.0-liter turbo, 2.4-liter and 2.5-liter Ecotec engines and begin making the automaker’s new-generation, 1.0- to 1.5-liter 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder Ecotec modular engines, as well. "The new Ecotec engine family represents the most advanced and efficient small displacement gasoline engines in GM’s history," said Arvin Jones, GM North America manufacturing manager. Already fitted to the Opel Adam in Europe (1.0-liter/3-cylinder turbo) and the 2015 Chevy Cruze (1.5-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder) in China, the automaker says these state-of-the-art powerplants will be found in five of its brands and 27 models globally by the 2017 model year.

Separately, press reports indicate that GM may shift the existing Chevy Equinox production to Mexico where the SRX was being produced.
