2016 Audi TT and TTS production begins

The first examples of the all-new third-generation Audi TT and TTS Coupes have begun rolling off of the assembly line at the state-of-the-art facility in Györ, Hungary. Since it began building the first generation of Audi‘s diminutive sportster back in 1998, workers at Györ have built over 500,000 TTs of various types and also now produce the new Audi A3/S3 sedans and the A3 Cabriolet.

The new Audi TT Coupe and more-potent TTS sibling will arrive here next year as 2016 models and are based on an aluminum-intensive architecture. However, this time around, it’s a bespoke version of VW’s new "MQB" modular transverse matrix platform that also underpins the new VW Golf and helps cut over 100 pounds out of the base model’s curb weight. The new TT’s edgier styling is matched by more sophisticated technology, including the automaker’s new modular virtual cockpit that was revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

No final word on powertrains for the U.S. version of either the 2016 Audi TT or TTS, but the most likely choices seem to be a pair of turbocharged, direct-injected TFSI 4-cylinder gasoline engines, a 227-horsepower version in the TT and a 306-horse variant in the TTS. Both are expected to be available with a 6-speed manual or paddle-shifted 6-speed S Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission and buyers will have the choice of front-drive or Quattro all-wheel drive configurations.
