It’s no secret that Audi has major aspirations for its new compact A3 family here in the U.S. With the impressive 2015 A3 Sedan now on the road and an A3 Cabriolet, A3 TDI Sedan, high-performance S3 Sedan and Cabriolet models and an A3 e-tron PHEV Sportback due to launch over the next 18 months, things already look promising to say the least. The picture just got a lot brighter with today’s reveal of another variation on the new-gen A3 theme: the 2016 Audi A3 TDI Sportback.

"The A3 TDI Sportback has an incredibly passionate and loyal fan base, this new version has been one of our most requested models since the announcement of the new A3 family," said Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America at the A3 TDI Sportback’s debut in New York. Those partisans will have to wait a bit, as this new turbodiesel as well as the A3 e-tron PHEV Sportback aren’t slated to arrive in showrooms here until sometime next year.

Like the Audi A3 Clean Diesel Sedan which goes on sale later in 2014, the new A3 TDI Sportback will be powered by a 150-horse/2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine backed by a standard 6-speed S tronic automatic transmission. While final EPA numbers are still a ways off, it’s safe to assume the highway figure for the 2016 A3 TDI Sportback will be well north of 40 mpg. Only time – and Audi – will tell whether even more Sportback surprises are looming.
