2015 Saleen FourSixteen unveiled

Best known for its line of Mustang-based street and racing high-performance models as well as the stunning S7 supercar, Saleen Automotive showed its first all-electric model at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Based on a Tesla Model S Sedan, the 2015 Saleen FourSixteen matches unique appearance with greater performance. In introducing the new FourSixteen, Saleen CEO Steve Saleen noted: "By dramatically improving the aerodynamics, suspension, braking and drivetrain we are able to create a car that accelerates quicker with vastly improved handling."

Subtle modifications 

Key exterior changes to the Saleen FourSixteen include bolder and more aerodynamic front/rear fascia treatments, a unique V-shaped hood that aids in cooling, custom side sills, a high-downforce rear spoiler and more efficient rear diffuser, most of which make use of weight-saving carbon fiber. The car is fitted with staggered-width 21-inch Saleen forged aluminum wheels wrapped in Z-rated 245/35-front and 295/30-rear tires, but a 22-inch upgrade with wider/lower-profile rubber is available as an option. The cabin remake on the FourSixteen has four individual bucket seats covered in two-tone leather and Alcantara, a leather-bound dash and custom door panels plus a revamped center console with more stow space and a cup holder.  

While the basic powertrain elements and 85kWh lithium-ion battery pack of the Tesla Model S carry over, the FourSixteen does feature an upgraded cooling system to cope with the more stringent demands driver’s may put on the car. Buyers also will be able to swap the standard 9.73:1 final drive gear for a deeper 11.39:1 that quickens acceleration as well as a Saleen-specific Maxgrip locking rear differential.

Chassis tweaked

In keeping with Saleen tradition, the FourSixteen also boasts a comprehensive chassis remake that brings track-calibrated "S4-spec" suspension bits. Highlighting the component lineup is a coilover shock system – including an optional adjustable setup — stouter springs, a larger diameter front sway bar and stiffer bushings along with the availability of a track-focused stability control system. Upgraded brakes are standard while carbon ceramic rotors are on offer for harder-core enthusiasts.

Pricing for the 2014 Saleen FourSixteen starts at $152,000 including the cost of a new Tesla P85 Model S but before any state or local rebates and/or incentives are considered. Saleen also plans to offer various FourSixteen components to current Model S owners who’d like a bit more personalization for their cars. More information can be found at www.saleen.com.
