Looking to add more performance to its lineup through its McLaren Special Operations (MSO) unit, the British exotic maker showed the McLaren MSO 650S as a coupe concept at the Beijing show. Now it has taken the wraps off the open top version as the 2015 McLaren MSO 650S Spider bowed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. It’s the first of a limited run of just 50 examples that will be available in both Spider and Coupe body styles.

Like the original MSO 650S design study, the production car will be a cosmetics-only exercise that retains the same 641-horsepower/3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as the standard 650S model. Penned by McLaren’s design chief, Frank Stephenson, the MSO 650S features a selection of bespoke satin-finish carbon fiber elements. These include extended MSO side blades, a carbon fiber center section in its recast bumper and a more aggressive rear diffuser. The car is set off by a set of Palladium-finished 10-spoke Super Lightweight alloy wheels that save nearly 10 pounds compared to the standard 650S rims.

Distinctive finishes

Buyers will be able to specify one of three metallic colors. Papaya Spark is a modern take on the classic McLaren Orange. Agrigan Black is the same ebony-infused-with-a-deep-ruby-flake seen on the Concept Coupe and a new hue, Sarigan Quartz, blends silver with gold appeared on the Goodwood Spider. Inside, the MSO 650S features carbon black leather and Alcantara upholstery set off with satin lacquered carbon fiber detailing and gloss black accents. A signature dedication plaque is mounted to the MSO-branded carbon fiber sill panels and an MSO-branded leather weekend bag along with a Frank Stephenson-signed sketch of the vehicle are included in the price.
