2015 Jeep Cherokee and Chrysler 200 share standard stop start

Looking to further boost fuel economy, Chrysler has announced it is making stop/start technology standard in 2015 Jeep Cherokee models equipped with V6 engines and 2015 Chrysler 200 sedans fitted with 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engines. The 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 in the Cherokee is an option while the Tigershark 4-cylinder is standard in the 200. Both models are equipped with the company’s 9-speed automatic transmission.

"We’re taking highly efficient engines and upping the ante to further benefit our customers," said Michael Duhaime, Global Director-Electrified Powertrain Propulsion Systems. Engine Stop-Start (ESS) "leverages intricate control strategies to deliver a superior driving experience, as well as expected fuel savings and emissions reduction."

Up to three percent better economy

The technology is expected to roll out on Cherokees beginning this summer, while the Chrysler 200 will offer it this fall. In addition to boosting fuel economy by as much as three percent, the company estimates it will see a corresponding three percent drop in CO2 emissions.

The ESS system incorporates a high-speed/high-durability starter that reduces crank time and results in quicker restarts. Engine controls monitor the vehicle’s speed and when it braked to a stop, fuel flow is cut, which turns the engine off. When the brake is released, the engine automatically restarts and the transmission is engaged in 0.3 seconds. The ESS is engaged every time the vehicle is started, though the driver can disable the system at the push of a button.
