The all-new and aluminum-intensive 2015 Ford F-150 SuperCrew pickup has now earned a coveted 5-Star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. By grabbing the top mark possible in NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program crash testing regimen, the redesigned F-150 upped its star count by one relative to its all-steel predecessor and joins the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 at the head of the full-size in pickup category while the 2015 Ram 1500 carries a 4-Star overall grade.

Ford says the new F-150 – which shed up to 700 pounds in curb weight as the result of replacing many of its steel body and chassis component with lighter-weight military-grade aluminum-alloy alternatives – is the safest-ever F-150 as well as the most fuel-efficient example of the automaker’s perennial best-selling vehicle. The development team also credits the F-150’s stellar marks to the effective implementation of new high-strength steel in its core structure, improved component-joining techniques and the introduction of a host of sophisticated active and passive safety systems ranging from Curve Control and Collision Warning with Brake Support to an adaptive steering column that adjusts energy management based on occupant size and belt usage and the Ford’s segment-first available inflatable rear safety belts.

"The five-star safety rating is a terrific example of One Ford collaboration and innovation," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. "Our truck team worked together for years to deliver this accomplishment, using an unprecedented combination of advanced materials throughout the all-new F-150."
