According to a technical paper previewed by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International, the new C7 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will replace its existing 6-speed automatic transmission with an all-new 8-speed alternative for the 2015 model year. While full details on this new transmission will have to wait until early 2014, this initial brief indicated that the 8L90 8-speed was designed to deliver quicker acceleration with better fuel economy and reduced NVH (noise/vibration/harshness) compared to the time-tested but cog-challenged 6-speed 6L80.

A cost-effective but versatile design for use in rear-drive applications, the new 8L90 will feature a wider overall ratio spread and have a lower first gear for added off-the-line snap. It also will be able to cope with up to 738 lb-ft of torque, which should allow it to make an appearance in the next-gen ZL1 if Chevy chooses to offer that ultra-‘Vette variant with an autoshifter.
