As always, next month’s Frankfurt Auto Show will be a major event for BMW, and the firm has announced plans to hold multiple world debuts highlighted by the formal reveal of its first plug-in electric sports car, the 2015 BMW i8 (pictured here in concept form). Frankfurt also will mark the global public unveiling of its new 2014 BMW 4 Series that will join the just-previewed 2014 BMW i3 electric vehicle, the new 2014 BMW X5 crossover and the BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor on the stand.

Taking the normal presentation experience one step beyond, BMW plans to give members of the press as well as regular show attendees the chance to take an early ride in a number of its vehicles – including the zero-emission i3 – on a purpose-built test track. This dual-level, figure-eight venue will encircle the automaker’s sprawling display area that literally takes up one full exhibition hall and also includes its Rolls-Royce and Mini brands. BMW estimates that during the 12 days the show runs, its fleet of i3 test vehicles will roll up over 5,600 demonstration miles on EV power.
