Time flies when you're having fun, and even though it didn't seem like it, our long-term Rogue was due for its 6-month service. While we were at it, we let the dealer know there had been some minor issues with the stereo and asked them to take a look at it.

The 6-month service isn't the most significant one the Rogue will get during its lifetime. However, the compact crossover SUV still went through an extensive inspection. The dealership checked out the brakes (including lines and cables, pads, rotors and linings), axle and suspension parts, drive shaft boots, steering components and the exhaust system. In all, the Rogue went through a 27-point inspection and passed with flying colors. Technicians also changed out the oil and installed a new filter, looked at the tires and set them to manufacturer-recommended pressures.

A bug in the radio

Once all of that was taken care of, the dealership looked into our question about the radio. A few different drivers noticed that there are times when the stereo doesn't turn on, an intermittent problem that happens at unpredictable times. The technicians took a look at the stereo, and of course it didn't act up while at the dealership. However, they reprogrammed the stereo's software in the hopes that it addresses the issue.

After the Rogue spent about an hour in the service bay, it came back to the Kelley Blue Book offices in tip-top shape and we were pleasantly surprised to discover that it had been treated to a car wash. So far, we've had no problems with the stereo since the Rogue has come back. And, best of all, the total cost for the service was only $30.50 for the oil and filter.

The CVT delivers 

The Rogue, which is powered by a 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter inline-4 engine, is backed by a Continuously Variable Transmission. Like an automatic, it doesn't require manual shifting, and because of the way it's designed to work, the CVT has the potential to provide a car with better fuel economy than a conventional stepped gear automatic. In the case of the Rogue, the CVT allows the front-wheel-drive model to get 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Because our long-termer has all-wheel drive, its fuel economy drops by 1 mpg in the city and on the highway, to 25/32. Aside from the CVT sounding different than a traditional automatic, there seem to be no complaints about its overall operation from the KBB editorial staff. Power and fuel economy have been what we anticipated. From a maintenance and service perspective, the only thing we'll have to do is ask the dealership to change the CVT fluid at 60,000 miles.
