Although the volume-build version of the new 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 won’t be in showrooms until this spring, its competition-spec alter-ego has just broken cover the form of the Camaro Z/28.R. Built to contest the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge that opens this weekend in Daytona, the new vehicle represents "a significant advancement" from the Camaro GS.R that won multiple races in that series during the past three seasons. According to Lisa Talarico, Chevrolet program manager for the series, the comprehensive upgrading should give this even more track-focused version a shot at winning the 2014 championship.

Spiritual successor to the original Camaro Z/28 that was created in 1976 to take part in the SCCA’s legendary Trans-Am Series for production-based sedans/coupes, the new-gen Z/28.R will be campaigned by Stevenson Motorsport and CKS Autosport in 2014. While these dedicated race runners are fitted with a variety of series-mandated items including roll cages and bespoke suspension bits, Chevy racing director Mark Kent says the 2015 Z/28.R also will remain one of the most production-based entries in the competition.

Facilitating that street-to-circuit transition is a plethora of performance-focused elements already present in the road-going Z/28’s bag of tricks. In addition to being substantially lighter than any other Camaro model, that track-focused list includes a 7.0-liter LS7 V8 with dry-sump lubrication, a helical-gear limited-slip rear differential, carbon-ceramic brakes and aero-enhancing/downforce-augmenting bodywork that includes a custom front splitter, belly pan, hood with center extractor vent, front tire deflectors, rocker sills and a rear spoiler with wickerbill.
