Expanding its use of even more fuel-efficient engine technology, the 2013 BMW X3 xDrive 28i will swap the 3.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-six engine used in the 2012 model for the 2.4-liter TwinPower Turbo four engine used in BMW’s Z4, 528i and just-introduced 328i Sedan. Although both engines are rated at 240 horsepower, the new N20 direct-injected four-cylinder develops 255 lb-ft of peak torque – 34 more than the six – all of which is on hand from 1,250-4,800 rpm. Fortified with a twin-scroll turbocharger, BMW’s Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing, this new engine will deliver even more immediate throttle response than the outgoing six as well as what BMW indicates will be a "significant improvement" in EPA fuel economy numbers.
In addition to making the TwinPower Turbo four its base motivator, the 2013 BMW X3 lineup will gain a number of other enhancements that currently can be found in the automaker’s 3 Series/5 Series/6 Series/7 Series lineups. Key new standard features include Auto Start-Stop, Driving Dynamics Control with ECO PRO, Lane Departure Warning and a power tailgate that was formerly optional on the xDrive 35i and not available on the xDrive 28i. The junior member of the X3 set also will get larger 18-inch alloy wheels as standard fitment and both models will come with chrome exhaust tips.
All BMW X3 models will continue to be assembled at the automaker’s factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Pricing for the 2013 BMW X3 xDrive 28i will start at $37,995 and the 2013 BMW X3 xDrive35i will open at $43,595. Both arrive at dealers in May. Full tech specifications and EPA numbers will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
