Rolling into showrooms this fall, the new 2013 BMW 135is Coupe and 135is Convertible will add a bit more sport and a bit more style to the automaker’s entry-level model line. For openers, both of these newcomers are fitted with an even more potent version of the 135i’s 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six that pops pony count from 300 to 320 and increases peak torque output from 300 to 317 lb-ft. Despite that added muscle, the engine maintains the same low emissions levels and EPA ratings as the one in a baseline 135i. The upgraded 135is engine also boasts a throatier-sounding performance exhaust system and gets an upgraded cooling system that includes a larger main fan and an auxiliary radiator. Buyers will be able to bake this more muscular engine with either a standard 6-speed manual transmission or optional automated manual, the 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission.
In keeping with BMW corporate tradition, these new "s" versions of the 135i also receive a more tautly tuned suspension system and feature a modified Dynamic Stability Control system with revised Dynamic Traction Control mapping that allows for more spirited driving before it swings into action.
Visual changes to the 2013 135is Coupe and Convertible include distinctive 18-inch alloy wheels, unique high-gloss black kidney grille elements, black mirror caps and special exterior badges in additional to the standard array of M Sport Package components. Inside, this dynamic duo boasts sport seats — with optional black leather trim and blue accent stitching — stainless steel pedals and special interior badges.
Pricing for the 2013 BMW 135is Coupe will start at $44,145 while the 135is Convertible will open at $48,845. While neither is a direct replacement for even edgier, 335-horsepower BMW 1 Series M Coupe that departed the lineup for MY 2012, both promise to be most engaging travelmates in their own right.
