What Is an EREV?

An extended range electric vehicle (EREV) functions much like a standard electric vehicle, with an electric motor or motors powered by a large battery pack. However, there’s one significant difference: EREVs have onboard internal combustion engines. Instead of powering the wheels, the gas engine in an EREV acts as a generator, recharging the propulsion battery pack without connecting to the drivetrain.

This configuration is sometimes also called a series hybrid setup, but the EREV term makes the concept easier to understand. While there are currently no EREV models on sale in the United States, previous vehicles include the Chevrolet Volt and BMW i3. New models are expected in the near future, including the Scout Terra pickup truck and Traveler SUV.
