Positive Review
I bought this car after using my mother's. Although earlier year models had a lot of problems, the 2001 has proven to be a great car -- a lot of bang for your buck!
Critical Review
Oh, where to start. Hard to believe but I've owned my 1998 Catera for 10 years. This is a very heavy, safe car. Driving dynamics are good. It is agile considering the weight of the car. Engine performance is good, gas mileage is so-so. Comfortable car inside. Reliability is terrible. What can go wrong will go wrong. This car eats tires, brakes, and batteries. Electrical system is a mess. Numerous sensors had to be replaced at great cost. The last sensor that went out cost $850 to replace, mostly because half the engine had to be dismantled to get to it. Good luck finding a local garage able and willing to work on this car. It is not an easy car to work on or get parts for inexpensively. Last straw for me...transmission went out. I am done putting anymore money into this car. Going to the salvage yard.

safe, fast and comfortable
gas, better torch, never figured out how the manue
Its a bit of a sled, but lacks no power, but drinks gas was thrurst you can bet on that. Safe, due to its wieght, drives live a champion, although im surprized the shocks arent better. sound system is to die for, will last forever, nothing usually goes wrong if its not a lemon. feels like a spaceship on the highway,,,
Too good to last. They don't make it anymore
It is getting impossible to get parts to repair.
I have 54,000 miles on this vehicle. I really never had any problems until I started driving the car regularly and then only occasionally. The problems seem to be sensor related and electrical. I drive the car and will never sell it. What a ride. It goes fast and is so comfortable. When I bought this car it had the most innovative options not on any other car at that time.
Clean nice car
Performance, acceleration & handling great
Reliability below par
The Catera is a performance car which is well appointed and is very comfortable for long trips. Its downfall is reliability although no major components (engine, transmission) have needed repair. Most problems have been things like warning lights not working properly. In most cases such as the brake pad wear indicator I simply disabled it. This car was well designed for touring at high speed.
rides very smoothly and well maintained
it only has one problem... the radio cuts off and comes back on
Nice ride, Nice features.
Quality is horrible. Repair bills through the roof
We bought this car from our mechanic. I have had it for 3-4 months. It has cost me , on average, $600 a month to keep it on the road. Fuel pump bad, needed special tool. Water pump bad. Key bad. They don't make that part anymore. Except for the mechanical part, it's very nice.
Best ride, performance, comfort, and reliability
I have been fortunate enough to own one of the original models made in Germany. It IS the best AUTOMOBILE (not a car)I have ever owned in my 60+ years of car ownership. I will NEVER sell it, trade it, or get rid of it in any way. We have an 18-year-old marriage, with no possibility of divorce. My one desire is to recondition the Queen to her original condition. Time & economics will have a dampening effect, but this is at the top of my bucket list! Hail to the Caddy Queen!!
