The Toyota RAV4 is at the head of the class among small SUVs, a result of constant improvement over the years. While the Toyota RAV4 essentially created the compact crossover SUV segment over two decades ago, for the past few years it has ceded the Best Buy title among those vehicles to its archrival, the Honda CR-V.
But 2021 is the model year in which the RAV4’s light shines brighter than all others in what is arguably the hottest vehicle segment of them all.
A RAV4 for all
The RAV4 isn’t just a critical success, it’s a smash hit with everyday buyers. In 2019, the RAV4 sold nearly 450,000 units, far outpacing every one of its rivals. The RAV4 clearly connects with shoppers, and part of its secret to success is the sheer variety of people it appeals to.
With a starting price just over $26,000 (plus destination), a base LE model is a great value for drivers just beginning their professional career or those on a budget who want a reliable, practical 5-passenger SUV that still comes loaded with today’s essentials like a touchscreen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration.
But that’s just the start. The RAV4 lineup spans about a dozen models and trims to meet a plethora of needs and desires.
At the top, a Limited model can be had with heated and ventilated front seats, hands-free liftgate, stitched dash, torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, and a JBL audio system, which could help the RAV4 pass for a premium SUV. Then there are the more adventurous versions, including a TRD Off-Road model, for outdoor enthusiasts and anyone else who’s fond of going off the beaten path.
Two hybrids, too
The standard RAV4 is already efficient, at up to 35 mpg on the highway thanks to its 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 203 horsepower. Those seeking even greater efficiency need only look to the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. It returns up to 41 mpg highway and makes more power, too, with 219 hp combined from its 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and electric motor.
New for 2021 is the Toyota RAV4 Prime – an awesome example of both power and efficiency. With a combined 302 hp, it is the most powerful RAV4 ever – and the quickest with a zero-to-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds. Yet being a plug-in it has the ability to travel up to 42 miles on electricity alone, and is even eligible for up to $7,500 in federal tax credits. The initial batch produced in 2020 is limited, but a ramp-up is expected in 2021.
A friend to all
No matter which RAV4 model you choose, they all have something in common: Easy manners and great practicality. The RAV4 is a pleasant partner in both the city and beyond. Non-hybrid models use a well-matched 8-speed automatic transmission that feels more natural than the continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) of competitors. Additionally, the standard RAV4’s power is well-matched for its primary purpose of shuffling individuals and small families.
We particularly like the RAV4 Hybrid. Aside from its sheer efficiency, the electric motor works silently behind the scenes yet provides a noticeable boost in power.
The RAV4 is also highly practical. Though its exterior dimensions are compact, it accommodates nearly 70 cu ft. of cargo with the rear seats folded.
Safety comes standard
Like many automakers, Toyota is serious about safety, made evident by the 2021 RAV4’s standard feature set. To be sure, all models in the 2021 RAV4 lineup include Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a suite of active safety and driver-assist systems that include pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and full-speed radar cruise control.
Even more features can be added, such as blind-spot monitoring, bird’s-eye-view camera, parking sensors and reverse automatic braking.
Further bolstering its credentials are the RAV4’s 5-star overall government crash-test rating and its Top Safety Pick status with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Reliability and resale value
The RAV4 shines as a vehicle with a reputation for standing the test of time. Its reliability is the reason you see so many older RAV4 SUVs still on the road. And its record of strong resale values means buyers today will get a better return when it comes time to sell tomorrow.
With its expansive lineup, efficient yet energetic powertrains, can-do attitude, and strong set of features, it’s little wonder that the RAV4 is the 2021 Best Buy Award winner among compact SUVs.
