As the electric vehicle (EV) market starts to heat up, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is landing some of the best punches in the EV battle.
Available for sale in all 50 states, the Mustang Mach-E brings some of the best plug-in style, tech, and performance available among (relatively) affordable electric cars. Its SUV-leaning shape and fresh attitude also contribute to the Mach-E’s value to both Ford and to the emerging EV landscape. When pricing gets added to the equation, the Ford Mustang Mach-E makes a value statement deserving of our 2022 Best Buy Award for electric vehicles.
Behold the Sports Car of SUVs
Driving the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E makes you believe in Ford’s commitment to an electric future. We love the idea of the forthcoming F-150 Lightning electric truck, but the Mustang Mach-E represents a more universal EV statement, offering high performance as well as high day-to-day usability.
Available in rear-wheel drive (a single rear motor) or all-wheel drive (front and rear motors), the Mustang Mach-E brings four levels of horsepower to the blacktop — 266, 290, 346, or 480. Whichever level you choose, your driving mood of the moment is answered exactly by the immediate torque of the electric motor (or motors). The Mach-E also lets you choose among three driving mode personalities — Whisper, Engage, and Unbridled (great names as well as apt descriptions).
Our review of the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E breaks these three drive modes down nicely: “Whisper mode is best for serene, everyday commuting, while Unbridled mode unleashes the performance potential of the Mustang Mach-E. For an engaging yet comfortable drive, Engage mode is a happy medium between the two extremes.”
Easy to Live With Every Day
In spite of this overwhelming ability to throw you back in your seat under hard acceleration, the Mustang Mach-E is not bearish to drive. It’s fairly quiet overall and has an easygoing suspension. And there are enough adjustments that you can make to give you the driving habits you want — including an aggressive “one-pedal” mode that milks all of the recharge energy it can from the regenerative braking, so you barely have to use the brake pedal at all.
The range for the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E varies from 211 miles (the 266-horsepower model with all-wheel drive) to 306 miles (the 266-horsepower version with rear-wheel drive and the $5,000 extended-range battery), and everywhere in between. Those ranges cover the gamut from okay to excellent among electric cars these days.
A Brilliant Packaging Job for American Drivers
The sleek SUV-ish exterior shape of the Mustang Mach-E pays off when you go inside. There’s good room in both rows, and rear headroom is better than you’d expect, considering the low sweep of the roofline. The rear hatch opens very wide and tall for loading, and there’s secure extra storage space in the front trunk (no engine, remember?).
Dominated by a huge 15.5-inch vertical infotainment touchscreen, the standard Mach-E ($43,895) interior includes strengths like seating for five upholstered in super-comfy ActiveX synthetic leather, a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel, and dual-zone climate control. Plenty of optional enhancements like a majestic panoramic glass roof and magic-tech like BlueCruise hands-free driving assistance are available.
On the peace-of-mind front, Ford Co-Pilot360 comes standard. This package comprises a raft of safety features that include the almost expected — intelligent adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision alert with automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, and rear parking sensors — as well as some bonus tracks — post-collision braking and Intersection Assist (which will stop the Mach-E if it senses that you’re about to turn left into oncoming vehicle).
EV Value, Delivered with Style
$43,895 may seem like a high board to dive from at first, but the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is well worth it. The Ford EV SUV is eligible for the maximum $7,500 federal EV tax credit, plus any other state and local incentives in your area. And if you’ve been pricing electric vehicles lately, you know that they command a premium over non-EVs.
Additionally, the standard safety and tech that you’ll value in the Mach-E enhances the SUV’s value, both now and over time. All that plus the two classic pillars of automotive appeal — performance and style — reside in the Mustang Mach-E.
