The 2021 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 slot between the base S trim and the high-performance Spyder and GT4 versions. These 718 GTS 4.0 models have a normally aspirated 6-cylinder boxer engine. Initially, the 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman GTS 4.0 will only come with a 6-speed manual transmission when order banks open this summer. A PDK will join the option list after launch.

What’s new on the 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and Cayman GTS 4.0?

Porsche has built a loyal fan base around its GTS trim, which is available across Porsche’s product line. Designed to balance elevated luxury and performance, this GTS philosophy holds true for the new 2021 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and 718 Cayman GTS 4.0. Both models come standard with a 4.0-liter, naturally aspirated engine attached to a 6-speed manual transmission. With 394 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque, the Boxster and Cayman GTS 4.0 can hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. That’s about 0.1 of a second quicker than the previous 718 Boxster and Cayman GTS.

Standard GTS 4.0 mechanical upgrades range from Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), featuring a 20 mm lowered ride height, to Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) and a mechanical limited-slip differential. Also fitted are larger 350 mm front and 330 mm rear brake rotors. Porsche’s trademark Sport Chrono package offers multiple drive modes with quicker throttle response and stiffer suspension settings plus a lap timer system. It’s standard on the GTS.

Unique exterior and interior features

The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 also feature distinctive exterior cues. These include dark-tinted headlight and taillight lenses, a unique front apron spoiler lip, and all-black air intakes. The package also includes satin black 20-inch wheels, red brake calipers and the same sport exhaust found on the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4. A distinctive GTS 4.0 script, also in black, broadcasts these models’ status on each door.

Interior upgrades, like Sport Seats Plus, a GT Sport steering wheel and swathes of Alcantara leather bolster the premium-yet-sporty theme of the GTS 4.0. So does the standard Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, consisting of a 7-inch touchscreen display with a Track Precision App synchronized to the Sport Chrono Package. This technology lets drivers record their track performance for later review.

As always, Porsche will offer a series of options on the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and Cayman GTS 4.0. Our favorites include the GTS interior package (contrasting seat belts, cross-stitching, and GTS embroidered headrests). Also available is the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) package (which swaps yellow brake calipers for the standard red).

How do the 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 drive?

The 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 have been tuned to deliver exceptional track performance without any compromise to on-road comfort and capability. The naturally aspirated engine responds immediately to throttle input; no waiting for boost with this engine. Paired with Porsche’s 6-speed manual, the wide, flat power curve and 7,800 rpm rev limit provides a deep reservoir of torque. The standard Sport Exhaust emits a rich, boxer engine note.

Class of 2021: The New and Redesigned Cars, Trucks and SUVs

Driving the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 around Portugal’s Estoril track illustrates masterful suspension tuning. Haul the GTS down from triple-digit speeds with consistent, predictable brake pressure, retain some trail-braking to rotate the front end, then let the active suspension cradle you through the apex before hopping on the throttle for a sling-shot exit. The trick to rapid (and rewarding) track time is confidence. The 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 serves it up. Not in bite-sized samples, but big, fulfilling mouthfuls.

How much do the 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and Cayman GTS 4.0 cost?

The 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 should start around $87,000. The list of standard equipment on these GTS 4.0 models would add at least $15,000 to the price of an S. This makes them a solid value in addition to the superb balance of performance and luxury they offer.
