2020 Buick Encore GX Priced

  • New addition to Buick SUV lineup
  • Slots in between Encore and Envision
  • Will feature new standard safety and driver assistance features
  • On sale in early 2020
  • Priced from $25,095 including $995 delivery

General Motors’ Buick division is adding a fourth crossover to its SUV lineup in the form of the 2020 Buick Encore GX. Slated to arrive in March, the Encore GX slots between the subcompact Encore and compact Envision SUVs. The mid-size Enclave completes the “E” lineup. Buick reports that almost 90 percent of its current U.S. sales come from its SUVs. “As we look to the future of Buick, the Encore GX positions us strongly as a consideration for those who want to purchase small or compact SUVs,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick and GMC.

Early speculation that Encore GX would replace Encore in the U.S. has been dispelled, as both models will be sold in 2020. The Encore GX will be available in three trim levels, Preferred, Select and Essence in front- and all-wheel drive configurations.

Two Engines to Choose From

The Buick Encore GX will come with a choice of engines. The standard engine is a 1.2-liter turbocharged engine, and the optional upgrade, a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine, offers up to 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, while delivering 31 combined mpg on 20 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.

Front-wheel drive is available with both engines, which will be backed by a Continuously Variable Transmission. Buyers who choose all-wheel drive will get the 1.3-liter engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission. This setup also comes with a disable switch, allowing the driver to shut off AWD when they want to optimize fuel economy and don’t need AWD capability.

How much will the 2020 Buick Encore GX cost?

Base price for the front-drive Encore GX Preferred is $25,095 including $995 destination. That’s $805 more than the entry level 2020 Buick Encore 1SV which is priced from $24,195 including destination. The 2020 Buick Envision starts at $33,190.

Moving up to the Encore GX Select trim level sees a sticker of $26,695, while the top trim Essence starts at $29,495. Again, all prices include $995 destination. All-wheel drive is $2,000 more on all trims and includes an upgrade to the 1.3-liter neinge, which is a $395 standalone option on front-drive models.

Interior Amenities and Cargo Space

The interior will have Buick’s QuietTuning, which is designed to minimize road noise. The cabin will also use premium materials, and options include leather seats, a heated steering wheel and an ionizing cabin filter.

Amenities will include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, optional wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity that can pair two phones at the same time. Also available will be the newest version of SiriusXM satellite radio with 360L, which expands the channel lineup to include satellite and streaming channels, as well as access to live and on-demand programming.

Encore GX will have a cargo capacity that’s nearly five cubic feet larger than Encore and just three cubic feet smaller than Envision. That puts Encore GX’s luggage compartment measurement at somewhere between 23.5 and 23.8 cubic feet. A hands-free power liftgate will be available, an option not seen in many subcompact SUVs.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Encore GX will come with standard safety and driver assistance features including Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. IntelliBeam automatically adjusting high-beams will also come standard.

There will also be several optional safety features available, including Rear Park Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a Rear Camera Mirror, which provides a wide, less obstructed rear view while parking and driving, and a High Definition Surround Vision camera system will also be available. Finishing off the optional safety features are Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, and camera-based adaptive cruise control and Automatic Parking Assist with Braking.
