It’s an important vehicle for the company. Last year, the Tiguan was the best-selling VW in the world. More than 900,000 of these compact crossovers rolled out of four VW factories around the globe.

What’s new on the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan

The U.S.-market 2022 Tiguan comes from Puebla, Mexico, and continues to use the long-wheelbase MQB chassis that made its debut in 2016.

As such, the new Tiguan is the same size as before, and offers an optional third-row seat. The engine carries over. The turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 makes 184 horsepower. Tiguan continues its availability in front- or all-wheel drive.

New look for Tiguan

The big change, however, is styling. While VW hasn’t shown the new Tiguan to the public yet, the company did provide the accompanying illustration to give us some clues. Frankly, the image doesn’t reveal much, but VW officials say the new Tiguan looks less horizontal and more muscular and dynamic than before, with LED lights front and rear.

Class of 2021: The New and Redesigned Cars, Trucks and SUVs

Inside, the 2022 VW Tiguan boasts multicolor ambient lighting, a new steering wheel (like the one used in the new Atlas Cross Sport) and the company’s latest MIB3 infotainment system. VW says this upgradable wireless platform allows for host of advancements, including over-the-air (OTA) updates and improved features like Travel Assist.

Will there be a Tiguan plug-in hybrid (PHEV)?

Volkswagen will sell a PHEV version of the new Tiguan in Europe. Equipped with a gas engine, an electric motor, a high-voltage battery and a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, the Tiguan PHEV will have an electric-only range of more than 31 miles. VW says there are no current plans to sell a PHEV Tiguan in the U.S., though it remains a possibility.

Will there be a diesel Tiguan in the U.S.?

Not likely. But there is a diesel Tiguan in the European market, equipped with a new “Twin Dosing” dual-catalytic exhaust treatment that reduces nitrogen oxides by more than 80 percent.

Where is the VW Tiguan built?

The Tiguan is built at four plants around the world: Wolfsburg, Germany; Kaluga, Russia; Shanghai, China; and Puebla, Mexico. All U.S Tiguans, for the record, come from Puebla.
