Following up on what it had only hinted at during a presentation at the CES show in Las Vegas, Mercedes-AMG offered some insight at the North American International Auto Show regarding what we can expect to see in its upcoming street-legal, ultra-high-performance hypercar being developed as “Project One.” Stating that “it marks the pinnacle of what is currently technologically feasible,” Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, notes this benchmark vehicle “points the way to AMG Future Performance.

What has been officially confirmed for now is that this potential rival to the Aston-Martin AM-RB 001 will be fitted with a version of the hybrid powertrain used in Mercedes-AMG’s 2016 Formula One championship-winning F1 W07 race car that matches a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine with a sophisticated energy recovery system. It will be teamed with an electrically driven front axle to create a sophisticated AWD setup, a package expected to develop something in excess of 1,000 total horsepower.

Strongly rumored but less certain, the all-carbon fiber Project One may bolster its adaptive suspension with a 4-wheel steering setup and incorporate F1-derived tech touches. It’s believed Mercedes-AMG will limit the run of these Project One cars to a maximum of 300 vehicles and each will carry a seven-figure sticker. Given that 2017 marks the 50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG, the new Project One hypercar seems likely to make its first public appearance at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
