Hyundai Previews Ioniq 5 Electric SUV

Hyundai has begun revealing the second of 23 planned electric vehicles (EVs). The company released three photos of its upcoming Ioniq 5 compact SUV, which seems to show a departure from its current signature style.

The Ioniq 5 makes the most of the brand’s new E-GMP EV platform. This skateboard-like configuration of batteries, electric motors, and suspension underpins its move toward electrification. The wheels are pushed further out to the corners of the vehicle than is possible with an internal combustion engine, which could lend itself to sharp handling.

Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 will be all-wheel drive, with motors on each axle. It will also boast a maximum range of 342 miles. Owners will be able to tap into the battery for non-driving uses, too.  An outlet mounted beneath the rear seats is live even when the car is not driving. Hyundai touts the feature in an amusing short video of a camper using the car to power an oven to bake a turkey in the wild.

The design features boxy lighting elements in front and rear that Hyundai calls “parametric pixels…inspired by the smallest unit of digital imaging.” The linear theme carries over to the wheel hubs, where a geometric design almost glows in the photos.

We expect the Ioniq 5 to go on sale late next year, as a 2023 model. Pricing is not yet known, but Hyundai promises more details next month.
