Honda Previews 2022 Civic Hatchback

Honda offered a first glimpse of the 2022 Civic Hatchback today, ahead of the car’s full reveal later this month.

The Civic is all-new for the 2022 model year. Honda unveiled the sedan version of its popular compact car in April and announced plans to follow up with a hatchback model soon. Our first glimpse of it came today, in this heavily-shadowed profile shot against a tropical sunset.

The photo shows the same narrower grille and almost-clamshell hood as the Sedan, with a gently sloping fastback more reminiscent of something from BMW than the usual Civic hatchback profile. It may mean a bit more cargo room than we’re used to seeing from Civic hatchbacks, though we’ll have to wait for more information to be sure.

Price is unknown, but the 2021 Civic hatchback starts at $22,200, plus a $995 destination charge.

The 2022 Civic sedan is available with a choice of two 4-cylinder engines, and we see no reason that should change for the hatchback model. A 2.0-liter found model found in lower trims makes 158 horsepower. A turbocharged 1.5-liter engine on higher trim levels comes with 180 hp. Both use a continuously variable transmission and send power to just the front wheels. Honda says that a six-speed manual will be offered on the hatchback model.

Honda says the new Civic rides on stiffer chassis than past models, which should improve handling.

The Civic hatchback will make its full debut on June 23 during a Civic Tour “Remix” virtual concert on YouTube. Once the hatchback is revealed in full, we expect a sporty Si and even faster Type R to follow.
