Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has joined the BMW Group, Intel and its subsidiary Mobileye to create a state-of-the-art autonomous driving platform that can be deployed globally. Under terms of the agreement, the partners seek to leverage their relative strengths in devising a scalable architecture that can support Level 3, Level 4 and ultimately fully-autonomous operation. The platform, which will be adaptable to each partner’s specific requirements, is slated to be on the road in 2021.

For its part, FCA is expected to bring engineering expertise and technical resources to the program that will effectively complement its sales volumes, geographic reach and experience in North America. “In order to advance autonomous driving technology, it is vital to form partnerships among automakers, technology providers and suppliers,” said FCA Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne when the deal was announced. “Joining this cooperation will enable FCA to directly benefit from the synergies and economies of scale that are possible when companies come together with a common vision and objective.” FCA currently has an existing agreement with Waymo–the Google/Alphabet autonomous driving operation–under which it is supplying a fleet of specially equipped Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans to be used in on-road testing.
