The 2022 BMW M3 and M4 have been available for several months, in both standard and how-is-it-possible-there’s-an-even-higher-performance-model Competition versions. But, for those of you who want something even faster, there will be a quicker all-wheel-drive version of both available in August.
Each xDrive model is $4,100 more expensive than the corresponding rear-wheel-drive (RWD )model — $76,900 for the M3 Competition with xDrive, and $79,000 for the M4 Competition. BMW also charges a $995 destination fee – one of the lower destination fees in the industry.
BMW this weekend revealed details of the BMW M3 Competition with xDrive and M4 Competition with xDrive models. On the high-performance editions of the company’s 3 series sedan and 4 series coupe, that added grip means quicker acceleration.
BMW says both cars accelerate to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. That’s 0.4 seconds faster than their rear-drive counterparts. In normal driving situations, power is sent to the rear wheels. When extra traction is required, it is then sent to the front. The system uses torque-vectoring to deliver power to each wheel individually when conditions require extra grip.
“This helps to transfer the drive torque to the road without any loss of power, especially when the car is being pushed hard or has less grip on one side,” BMW explains.
In addition to the quicker sprint, BMW says the system improves “traction, handling stability, agility, and dynamism.”
