The 2022 BMW iX electric SUV could become a benchmark for the industry with its sustainable design and production methods. It’s not just emissions-free, but is also made in factories running on renewable energy, built with recyclable and reclaimed materials, and uses electric motors designed without rare-earth metals because of the human rights concerns associated with mining them. But it’s still a BMW. So it needs to be fun to drive.
Five hundred horsepower ought to do it.
BMW has released approximate pricing and specs for the iX. It will start “around $85,000” and will be available for pre-order in June.
Its two electric motors, one per axle, will have a combined output of 500 horsepower. With a battery capacity of over 100 kWh, driving rage will be over 300 miles on a charge. BMW says that DC fast charging should add 75 miles of driving range in just 10 minutes.
The iX will get from a standstill to 62 mph in less than 5 seconds and have a limited top speed of 124 mph.
Those numbers put it comfortably within range of the Tesla Model X, which is likely to be its closest competition for buyers’ attention.
