Two key members of the Volkswagen Group, Audi and Porsche, have announced a agreement to cooperate on creating shared vehicle architecture intended to “shape the mobility of the future.” The objective of this effort is to more quickly and effectively deal with the challenges involved with the electrification, digitization and autonomous aspects of tomorrow’s cars, while helping the VW Group significantly trim costs.

“The best brains of both companies will together set the technical course for the future,” stated Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG. “We are united by many shared values; above all, by our pursuit of the best solutions and the best offerings for our customers.”

While citing no specific details how the two operations will interact to expedite the overall development process, Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG promised this new alliance will take full advantage of the collective expertise on hand and exploit all available synergies that exist between the two automakers. However, he did offer one not-unexpected caveat shared by his Audi counterpart: “We will cooperate wherever it makes sense. But we will also be very careful to maintain the differentiation between our brands.” To that end, Blume added: “A Porsche is always a Porsche, and that will remain so in the future.”
