2022 Audi RS 3 Gets 401 Horsepower, Torque-Splitting Tech, Drift Mode

For 2022, the Audi RS 3 gets a horsepower boost and a high-tech rear differential that takes torque vectoring to a new level. The little high-performance sedan is now good for a 0-62 mph mph sprint in just 3.8 seconds.

Audi showed off the high-performance model of its redesigned compact sedan in a driving demonstration but hasn’t released official photos yet. We expect those soon. The numbers we have are also for the European-spec model. We expect it to be largely the same for the U.S. but won’t know officially until Audi reveals the American version.

Price is not yet known. But for reference, the 2020 edition of the RS 3 — the latest available — starts at $56,200, plus $995 for delivery.

A Power Boost and New Torque-Vectoring Tech

A turbocharged inline 5-cylinder engine still powers the 2022 RS 3, but a horsepower boost means it now boasts 401 horsepower, up from 394. That puts it within punching distance of the BMW M2’s 405 horsepower.

Audi hopes to take down the M2 with its trick rear differential, though. It’s a complex device, so we’ll let Audi explain:

“The torque splitter uses one electronically controlled multiple-disc clutch each on the respective drive shaft. During dynamic driving, the torque splitter increases the drive torque to the outer rear wheel with the higher wheel load, which significantly reduces the tendency to understeer. In left-hand curves, it transmits the torque to the right rear wheel, in right-hand curves to the left rear wheel, and when driving straight ahead to both wheels.”

Driving Modes Include a Drift Setting

Because the torque splitter can send 100% of its power to the rear, the RS3 now comes with a drift mode. Other modes enable casual driving or maximum-grip driving for track days.

The RS 3 sends engine output through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to all four wheels (when not in drift mode, that is).

Newly-developed 6-piston steel brakes bring it to a stop. Optional ceramic brakes come with their own specially designed brake pedal. Buyers who choose the ceramic option can choose red, blue, or grey calipers.
